How we score and rate credit cards

We believe credit card ratings should be clear and fair. That’s why every card we review goes through the same structured evaluation process.

We break down performance into measurable categories and convert the results into an easy-to-understand 5-star rating. We evaluate every card using the following nine categories,

  • Net Value and Cost Efficiency
  • Rewards and Earnings power
  • Welcome Bonus value
  • APR and Interest Structure
  • Card Simplicity and Transparency
  • Perks, Benefits and Protections
  • Issuer Credibility and Financial Strenght
  • Installment and BNPL features
  • Eligibility and Approval Accessibility

After that, we calculate final card star rating from these categories using the weighted average technique and normalize.

Rating pipeline: from data to stars

We score each card across multiple subcategories on a 0–10 scale. Subcategory scores roll up into category scores (0–10), which are then weighted to produce a final raw score. That score is converted into a 0–5 star rating.

Ratings reflect performance relative to the pool of cards we have analyzed.

Here is our ranking pipeline:

Raw Inputs → Subcategory Scores (0–10) → Category Scores (0–10) → Raw Score (0–10) → Normalized Score (relative to best in dataset) → Star Rating (0–5)

Star rating calculation

Each card receives a Raw Score (0–10) based on our weighted evaluation framework,

Raw Score (0–10) = Σ (Category Score × Category Weight),

where Category Weights sums up to 100% over all nine categories.

To allow fair comparison across the cards we analyze, we normalize scores relative to the highest raw score in our dataset,

Normalized Score (0–10) = (Card Raw Score ÷ Highest Raw Score in Dataset) × 10

The highest-scoring card in our dataset is assigned a normalized score of 10. All other cards scale proportionally.

The Star Rating (0–5) is calculated as follows,

Star Rating = Normalized Score ÷ 2

This means the highest-performing card within our analyzed pool receives 5 stars. Ratings reflect relative performance among the 200+ credit cards currently included in our evaluation universe.

Unified weighting approach

All cards are evaluated using the same category weights, regardless of card type.

This ensures consistency and allows direct comparison across different types of credit cards – including travel, cashback, student, secured, and premium cards.

Rather than adjusting weights to favor specific card categories, we apply a universal evaluation framework that captures net value & cost efficiency, rewards & earning power, welcome offer, interest rate, introductory 0% APR period, perks, benefits, protections, issuer credibility and stability, etc.

This approach allows every card to compete within the same analytical model.
